Rwenzori Mountains National Park
Located in western Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwenzori mountains national park is a home to the fabled Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” which feature Africa’s third-highest peak – Margherita on, Mount Stanley. The park is renowned for its dramatic glacial scenery, diverse flora and fauna, including rare species endemic to the Albertine Rift region. There are challenging multi-day Rwenzori treks to the snow-capped peaks of Magherita, with options for both experienced mountaineers and adventurous hikers. There are different routes to use to the summit including the Central circuit, Kilembe and Bukurungu route.
Mount Elgon National Park
Situated on the eastern border of Uganda near the town of Mbale, Mount Elgon national park encompasses Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano with the largest volcanic base in the world. The park features diverse ecosystems, including montane forests, bamboo zones, heathlands, and the spectacular Jackson’s Summit. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Located in southwestern Uganda, near the borders with Rwanda and the DRC, Mgahinga gorilla national park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which encompasses several volcanoes shared between Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC. Among the mountains include the three volcanic peaks of Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo that offer hiking trails through lush forests and volcanic landscapes, with opportunities to encounter endangered mountain gorillas and other wildlife.
